Data Collection

The Data Collection activity allows the teacher and/or students to build, display and search a bank of record entries about any possible topic. The format and structure of these entries can be text, files, images, URLs, numbers, geographic coordinates, and many others.

Students add records to Data Collection by entering the various data items into the database that then can use for analysis and research.

Why do I want to use Data Collection?

  1. Allow students to gather data points into a central database.

  2. Generate a vast collection of data records to later use for research and analysis.

  3. Help students to collaboratively gather data about a possible topic/subject.

Educational Insight

As students are able to collect data from any topic, this activity is ideal for any lab work where students have to gather information about a subject.

Additionally, it gives students autonomy over their own learning experience and allows them to co-create their own knowledge alongside their peers

What can I use Data Collection for?

As Data Collection is very versatile, it can be use for a ton of purposes but primarily as a content/data bank. Some of its potential use in educational context can include:

  • Lab work (collect data of experiments).

  • Generate time sheets.

  • Collect project resources.

  • Analyse and research data.

How does it work?

You (teacher) provide students with central database structure and basic instructions for students on how to conduct their data collection.

Then students populate the data structures with data they collect.

Students can view the data that they have individually collected and the teachers can view/edit/add/export records to the database.
