Leader Selection

Leader Selection is a special collaboration tool!

In learning designs where you have created teams, you (the teacher) might want students to perform activities in group, but rather than getting one response from each member of the team, you might want to just get one student that collects, summarises, replies and answers on behalf of the whole team.

In these cases, you want to use the Leader selection activity which will prompt the students within a team to select a leader that will take the leadership role for the entire team.

This activity is rather simple and aside from students reading the instructions and selecting a leader, there is no much to it. However, once the leader is selected, in future activities the leader will play the acting role on behalf of the team.

For instance in the case of a team assessment, only the leader will be able to answer the questions on behalf of the team.

Why do I want to use Leader Selection?

  1. For any activity that requires team collaboration and a single output for a team.

  2. Promote student accountability and initiative taking.

  3. Allow students to take responsibility of their team work .

  4. Help students develop inter-personal and leadership skills.

Educational Insight

It's a valuable chance for students to develop communication, coordination, consensus reaching and leadership skills.

What can I use Leader Selection for?

For any learning design where you require teams and the output from all members of a team has to be summarised or provide a single consensuaded answer from the team.

Pedagogies that use Leader Selection: Team Based Learning.

How does it work?

When using Leader Selection, it is important to give instructions as to what the leader role will entail in the lesson. At Authoring time, you can give details of the leaders' role in the activities in the lesson.

Then when students access the leader selection activity, one of them will have to choose to become the team's leader and will carry the role for the remaining of the lesson.

The teacher can change leaders for a team at any time during the lesson though.
